The high summer air settled down on the fields, golden wheat fields nodding under the heat. At the top of a hill, Demeter watched as mortal men scurried around, trying to harvest the crops before Zeus' storm hit. They did not need to worry about it though; the men had made the proper sacrifices to Demeter, and they would be rewarded with a quick harvest.
From behind her, Demeter heard the sound of laughter. She did not have to turn to know it was Hermes and her daughter Kore. Demeter frowned slightly, she couldn't trust Hermes. She hoped Kore would be intelligent enough to not get infatuated, but she was young. Too young for her to approve of their friendship, and Demeter turned from the workers to find her daughter and take her home.
She walked down the hill and and headed into the meadow. Sure enough there on a boulder were Kore and Hermes. Kore was on her back, her light honey colored curls tumbling of the side of the rock. Hermes was sitting next to her, his ever present smile firmly in place. Kore had apparently just told him something funny, because he suddenly burst out laughing, his upturned green eyes flashing. Suddenly he saw Demeter watching and stopped laughing. He nudged Kore who sat up.
"Mother, what do you want?" Kore seemed rather off put. Demeter frowned slightly, she really would have to put a stop to this relationship. Something might happen.
"Zeus is sending a storm. Its time to go home. Come now Kore, say goodbye." Kore rolled her eyes, letting her head fall back,
"Mother, I can stay out in the storm. I am his daughter, nothing will happen to me. Just one more hour." From her side Hermes watched quietly, he would have no part in this daily argument.
"Kore, you will come with me now and stop arguing." Kore hesitated "Now." The ground around Demter's feet began to sprout thorns, weeds and brambles, twining around in a dark mass. Kore knew it was useless, so she quietly slipped from the rock and landed softly, her short white dress fluttering about her pale skin. Before she left, she turned to Hermes and said
"Tomorrow, here at three." He nodded, then grabbed his staff that was lying next to him. Hermes stood, nestled his helmet around his dark curls as his sandals sprouted wings and he flew up to Olympus.
Kore sighed, and turned back to follow her mother home.
Um, well... its been quite some time since i wrote anything. School got really busy? Anyway, The myth of Hades and Persephone has always been one of my favorite myths, and after reading a bunch of the work here, i decided i should just go ahead and write my own.
The name Kore is Persephone's name before she descended to the underworld, and some art on here that inspired me, or a t least looks like how I imagined the characters can be found here. In the next chapters Apollo and Hades should appear. All the artist work is really lovely, check it out
